Road to Wee Jasper
Harden Art Prize 2024 – Finalist

After facing my own mortality, I made a vow – to live completely. It was through this that I rediscovered art – not as a hobby, but as a lifeline; a way to a whole of self.

As a child I enjoyed watercolours. So, I joined an evening watercolour class at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery. Next door was a Printmaking studio. The smell of ink, the fascination of the acids, the lure of the presses. Everything changed. I dove in: I haven’t surfaced since.

My career is “left-brain” – structured, logical, responsible. Art and printmaking awakened my “right-brain”: my creativity, visual imagery and emotions. A large part of me that had been waiting.

Today, I work with collagraphs, drypoint, linocut, and etching. Each technique and characteristics to convey elements. Each has its own rhythm in its creation, contributing to my vision.

When I carve into linoleum, I disappear. Time dissolves. My thoughts narrow into clarity, into focus. This is my meditation.

I am always experimenting – mixing methods, blending, learning from the unexpected. I reflect what I see in the world: the beauty, the imbalance, the quiet details we miss. Travel inspires me, as does the raw interaction between nature and human presence.

I am drawn to colour – life is colour. I look for light, for perspective and contrast for depth of field, and feeling. I want to create space in my prints: space to breathe, to think, to feel.

My work began as something personal, but printmaking creates more than one copy, so I share. Could it be that my journey is also yours?
